DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, Dennison, Howard & Davis, 15J, 18S, silver original B.W.Co. (Boston Watch Co.) HC with eagle hallmark, attractive engine turning and engraving detail including a ribbon extending diagonally around the case, cuvette engraved "John Callaghan. Bought. April 1857," white enamel dial, gold hour and minute hands, KWKS, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, s#3978. A historically important watch by Waltham's predecessor, the Boston Watch Company; this excellent example is notable for its original condition and its interesting case inscription which dates to the same month that the Boston Watch Co. was forced to declare insolvency.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, fine scratch to left side (as oriented in our photo) of barrel bridge, scattered mild spots to plates; dial with scattered hls; excellent hands, slight bend to minute; case shows light wear, an attractive dark patina, no dents or dings, good overall engine turning and engraving detail though with some portions of full loss of engine turning at several areas of shoulders and at lower portion of band, cuvette with profuse fine scratches radiating from winding aperture caused by past key slips while winding, rear hinge missing one end-cap; bow pivots freely and with significant play within pendant sockets; good glass crystal.
